Disney Unveils Heartwarming Christmas Ad ‘The Boy and the Octopus’ with Director Taika Waititi to Support Make-A-Wish

This holiday season, Disney has released a heartwarming Christmas ad titled The Boy and the Octopus, directed by Oscar-winner Taika Waititi. The ad tells the whimsical story of a young boy who discovers an unexpected companion during a seaside holiday – a playful octopus that attaches itself to his head. As the boy brings the octopus home, they form a touching friendship, with the child introducing his new friend to the wonders of life on land.

This new campaign celebrates Disney’s 40-year partnership with Make-A-Wish, embodying the themes of family, friendship, and the magic of connection that are especially meaningful during the festive season. Hidden within the ad are subtle nods to beloved Disney classics, including Moana, Lilo & Stitch, and Toy Story, adding a nostalgic element for Disney fans.

A Symbol of Togetherness: ‘From Our Family To Yours’

This year’s campaign is part of Disney’s From Our Family To Yours series, which reflects the importance of family traditions and the joy of togetherness. Alongside the main story of The Boy and the Octopus, Disney has also reintroduced its 2020 Christmas ad featuring the tale of a grandmother, her granddaughter, and a vintage Mickey Mouse toy that connects their memories through the generations. The beloved Mickey Mouse plush featured in this ad is available for purchase on ShopDisney.co.uk, with proceeds going to Make-A-Wish.

To bring the ad’s heartfelt message to life, Disney collaborated with UK artist Griff, who performs Love Is A Compass, the official soundtrack to the campaign. The song, released as a charity single, is available for download, with all proceeds going to support Make-A-Wish. Recorded by a 60-piece orchestra at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, the track echoes Disney’s signature combination of warmth and nostalgia.

Supporting Make-A-Wish

As part of its long-standing commitment to Make-A-Wish, Disney is encouraging fans to share their own festive family memories on social media with the hashtag #LoveFromDisney. For each post shared, Disney will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $100,000, helping the charity grant life-changing wishes to children facing serious illnesses. Additionally, select families will be invited to a special wish-fulfillment weekend at Disneyland Paris, offering a magical experience to create cherished memories.

Luciano Manzo, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish International, expressed gratitude for Disney’s continued support. “Our 40-year partnership with Disney has granted countless wishes to children worldwide, bringing comfort and hope to families when they need it most. We’re thrilled to once again be part of Disney’s holiday campaign, which celebrates joy, family, and the spirit of giving back.”

A Celebration of Disney Magic

Disney’s chief brand officer, Asad Ayaz, shared his excitement about working with Taika Waititi on this year’s campaign. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Taika on this timeless story of childhood friendship against the backdrop of the holiday season. It’s a beautiful reminder of the magic that Disney brings into people’s lives.”

The ad, produced by Adam&EveDDB and Hungry Man, showcases Disney’s knack for storytelling, blending humour, warmth, and emotion. With hidden Easter eggs, a classic story arc, and a soundtrack that tugs at the heartstrings, The Boy and the Octopus has all the elements of a holiday classic.

This campaign not only celebrates Disney’s rich storytelling legacy but also highlights the company’s dedication to giving back and creating meaningful connections. By merging nostalgia with charitable giving, Disney’s 2024 Christmas campaign encapsulates the spirit of the season, encouraging families everywhere to celebrate the joy of togetherness and the power of making wishes come true.
