IBM Unveils Granite 3.0 AI Models with Strong Open-Source Commitment

IBM has launched its most advanced range of AI models to date, the Granite 3.0 family, during its annual TechXchange event. This new lineup, designed for a wide range of applications, marks a significant step forward for the tech giant, reinforcing its commitment to open-source development in the AI space.

The Granite 3.0 series features models tailored for various enterprise needs, including:

  • General purpose/language: Available in 8B and 2B variants, both in Instruct and Base configurations.
  • Safety: Guardian models, designed to implement robust guardrails, also in 8B and 2B sizes.
  • Mixture-of-Experts: A collection of models optimised for diverse deployment scenarios.

IBM claims that the Granite 3.0 language models—particularly the 8B and 2B variants—are capable of matching or exceeding the performance of similarly sized models from other leading providers on numerous academic and industry benchmarks. These versatile models are designed for enterprise-level tasks such as Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), classification, summarisation, and entity extraction.

Open-Source Commitment and Enterprise Focus

A standout feature of the Granite 3.0 family is IBM’s decision to release the models under the Apache 2.0 open-source licence. This approach grants both enterprise clients and the broader AI community greater flexibility and autonomy, with a focus on transparency and collaboration. IBM believes that enterprises can achieve significant cost savings by combining Granite models with their own proprietary data. The entire suite of Granite 3.0 models is available for download on HuggingFace, with commercial licensing options available through IBM’s watsonx platform.
