Yorkshire’s marketing and SEO sector is witnessing remarkable growth, with several cities across the region experiencing a surge in demand for local services. Leading the charge is York, which is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in Yorkshire’s evolving marketing landscape.
Recent findings from York-based SEO agency, Nomada Digital, reveal significant increases in searches for marketing and SEO services throughout the region. Data gathered from Google search trends and Companies House indicates that York is at the forefront, contributing to an 88% rise in searches for “SEO agency” and a 100% jump in “Marketing agency” queries across Yorkshire between August 2023 and August 2024.
York’s Rise as a Marketing Powerhouse
York has positioned itself as a growing force within Yorkshire’s digital marketing scene, with searches for “SEO agency York” doubling from 70 in August 2023 to 140 in August 2024. This represents a 100% increase, underscoring the city’s expanding influence in the region. Similarly, searches for “Marketing agency York” climbed by 27%, reflecting the broader trend of businesses increasingly seeking local marketing expertise.
York’s ascent mirrors the overall surge in digital marketing demand seen across Yorkshire. Other cities are also enjoying a boom, with Hull witnessing a 100% increase in searches for “SEO agency Hull,” while Harrogate saw a 67% rise in SEO-related queries and a 29% uptick for marketing services. Sheffield, too, experienced a 50% increase in searches for marketing agencies, signalling its growing digital presence. However, some areas, such as Doncaster and Wakefield, recorded declines, indicating that the demand for marketing services is not uniform across the region. Despite this, the overall picture is one of increasing interest in digital marketing, as businesses across Yorkshire turn to local agencies to bolster their online visibility.
Expanding Marketing Sector Across Yorkshire
In addition to rising online interest, Yorkshire’s marketing industry is seeing notable growth in the number of new agencies entering the market. York, in particular, has witnessed year-on-year expansion, with a 229% rise in new “active” advertising agency registrations from 2022 to 2023. Sheffield has seen a 175% increase, while Leeds posted a 124% growth in new agencies, contributing to the region’s overall development.
Despite this growth, the sector remains volatile. Between 2021 and 2023, 375 advertising agencies across Yorkshire either dissolved, closed, or entered administration. Leeds accounted for 108 of these closures, while Sheffield saw 97 agencies shutter their doors. This volatility reflects the broader economic challenges faced by the marketing sector, as businesses grapple with market uncertainties and financial pressures.
Budget Concerns for Yorkshire’s Agencies
As the next government budget approaches, there is growing concern among Yorkshire’s marketing agencies about the potential economic impact on their businesses. Many local agencies are calling on policymakers to recognise the vital role they play in supporting the broader business ecosystem. A favourable budget could prove crucial in stabilising the sector, enabling it to continue growing and providing essential services to businesses across the region.
“Yorkshire has the potential to become a real centre of marketing excellence, but it needs the right support to reach its full potential,” says Danny Sullivan, Founder of Nomada Digital. “We hope the upcoming budget will help stabilise and support the sector, allowing agencies across the region to continue delivering value to Yorkshire businesses.”
Supporting Yorkshire’s Marketing Sector for Future Growth
Sullivan emphasises the importance of a robust local marketing industry, not only for the sector itself but for the wider business community in Yorkshire. “Each city and town in Yorkshire has its own strengths and business needs, and the increasing demand for marketing services shows that local businesses are seeking expertise to help them grow and thrive.”
As cities like York, Hull, Harrogate, and Sheffield show positive growth trends, Yorkshire is well-positioned to become a significant player in the UK’s marketing industry. Local agencies are hard at work supporting businesses as they navigate the complexities of the digital age, helping them expand their reach and adapt to changing market dynamics.
The rising demand for SEO and marketing services across Yorkshire signals a shift in how businesses are approaching growth and development strategies. With the right backing from policymakers and continued dedication from local agencies, Yorkshire’s marketing sector is poised for sustained success in the years ahead.
