MHRA Introduces ‘AI Airlock’ to Accelerate Adoption of AI in UK Healthcare

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has unveiled its pioneering ‘AI Airlock’ initiative, a pilot scheme aimed at streamlining the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into the NHS while prioritising patient safety.

This ambitious programme has selected five cutting-edge healthcare solutions that address critical needs, from cancer diagnostics to chronic respiratory diseases. With AI-driven tools poised to revolutionise healthcare delivery, the AI Airlock offers a secure environment for refining regulatory processes, enabling faster and safer adoption of these transformative technologies.

A Digital Sandbox for AI Innovation

The AI Airlock operates as a “sandbox” environment—a controlled space for developers to test their technologies in real-world scenarios. This unique framework helps manufacturers gather vital evidence needed for regulatory approval, addressing the complex and evolving nature of AI systems.

Unlike traditional medical devices, AI models adapt and learn over time, presenting unique challenges for demonstrating safety and efficacy. The AI Airlock allows innovators to navigate these hurdles under regulatory guidance, providing insights into both practical application and compliance.

The Selected Innovations

The five technologies selected for the AI Airlock pilot represent some of the most promising applications of AI in healthcare:

  • Lenus Stratify: Developed by Lenus Health, this tool analyses patient data to predict severe outcomes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aiming to reduce hospital admissions and improve quality of life.
  • Philips Radiology Reporting Enhancer: This AI-powered system streamlines radiology reporting by automating critical sections, enhancing accuracy and efficiency in diagnostics.
  • Federated AI Monitoring Service (FAMOS): Created by Newton’s Tree, FAMOS addresses the challenge of “drift” in AI systems, monitoring performance in real time and enabling swift corrections to maintain reliability.
  • OncoFlow Personalised Cancer Management: This platform accelerates cancer treatment workflows, starting with breast cancer and aiming to expand across oncology, reducing waiting times and improving survival rates.
  • SmartGuideline: Using large-language AI trained on NICE guidelines, this tool provides clinicians with precise answers to routine medical questions, ensuring treatments are both accurate and up-to-date.

Beyond the Pilot

The findings from the AI Airlock pilot, expected in 2025, will shape future regulations for AI-enabled medical devices in the UK. The initiative also supports the development of a post-Brexit UKCA marking process, enhancing transparency and efficiency in regulatory pathways.

By addressing challenges outlined in Lord Darzi’s recent review of the NHS, the AI Airlock represents a significant step toward leveraging AI to alleviate the system’s growing pressures. With the potential to predict illnesses, streamline workflows, and improve outcomes, AI could become a cornerstone of sustainable healthcare in the UK.
