Samsung Unveils Gauss2 AI Model at SDC24 Korea: A Leap Towards Smarter Living

Samsung Electronics has unveiled its latest multimodal AI model, Gauss2, at the Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) in Korea. This cutting-edge AI is designed to elevate user experiences across Galaxy smartphones, IoT devices, and the broader SmartThings ecosystem.

Revolutionising User Experiences

Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President and CTO of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation:

“Samsung Electronics is committed to developing cutting-edge software, including AI and data analytics, to enhance user experiences. With three distinct models, Samsung Gauss2 is already boosting our internal productivity, and we plan to integrate it into products to deliver higher levels of convenience and personalisation.”

Gauss2: The Evolution of Multimodal AI

Building on last year’s debut of its generative AI model, Gauss2 represents a significant leap forward. It comes in three versions—Compact, Balanced, and Supreme—each tailored to meet specific computational requirements:

  • Compact: Optimised for resource-limited environments, ensuring robust on-device performance.
  • Balanced: Strikes a middle ground between performance, speed, and efficiency, making it ideal for diverse tasks.
  • Supreme: Employs Mixture of Experts (MoE) technology, delivering maximum efficiency while minimising computational costs.

Gauss2 supports nine to fourteen languages, depending on the model, and multiple programming languages. Custom-built training techniques and tokenisers enhance efficiency, making response generation 1.5 to 3 times faster than leading open-source alternatives.

Driving Productivity Through AI

Samsung’s in-house generative AI has already gained traction within the company. The coding assistant, code.i, enhanced by Gauss2, is widely used by the DX Division and international research teams, with 60% of developers adopting it as part of their workflow.

Another Gauss-powered service, the Gauss Portal, has revolutionised productivity with features like document summarisation and translation. Its use has expanded globally, including in call centres, where it streamlines tasks through AI-driven categorisation.

The Future of AI at Samsung

Samsung is focused on refining AI applications to further enhance internal operations and consumer services. The next generation of code.i aims to expand its natural language processing capabilities, while the Gauss Portal is set to offer advanced features like multimodal functionality for analysing charts and creating images.

The company’s “AI for All” strategy underscores its vision of integrating AI across its product lines. By combining AI with knowledge graph technology, Samsung plans to deliver deeply personalised experiences to its users.

A Glimpse of Samsung’s AI Vision

Beyond Gauss2, SDC24 showcased innovations across software development and AI integration. Attendees participated in 29 technical sessions covering:

  • Advancements in Samsung’s health ecosystem.
  • Enhancements to the SmartThings platform using generative AI.
  • Insights into the code.i AI assistant.
  • Lifestyle content innovations for Samsung TVs.
  • AI-driven solutions for home appliances.

SDC24 underscored Samsung’s mission to weave AI seamlessly into its ecosystem, promising smarter and more connected experiences for its users.
